That could well be the sole problem, particularly since the modem driver 
install and initial CONNECT was OK..
My guess is that the PPP package which should have includd bsd_comp was 
not assembled properly
But test by reinstalling the ppp providing package, then rerun the 
findppp test again.

Also on my System:
$ grep BSDCOMP /boot/config-2.4.25-marv1
CONFIG_PPP_BSDCOMP=m
 Meaning  bsd_comp.o   is compiled as a module.
What is shown on yours by:
$ grep BSDCOMP /boot/config-2.4.20-20.9

If necessary you can within the kernel_source
#  make bzImage
which will build the whole module set again. and the kernel
