That what I am doing, only difference is semantics I use chmod 755.
Jacques

But I get A message saying that: ALSA support is not compiled in (see
README for howto).

Will it fail with that message if I don't have required libraries on my
system?

Steve,
Your difficulty to understand our jargon is why I wrote my last mail.
The operations to be done are, step by step:

1-Download=20
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz
Clearly you have already done that.
2-Unpack this archive with the command:
tar zxf SLMODEMD.gcc4.tar.gz
You have done that as well.
3-This creates a new folder, enter this folder with
cd SLMODEMD.gcc4
You have done that as well too.
4-The command ls will show you the following:
[goldberg@localhost]~/Desktop/SLMODEMD.gcc4>ls
1st_Read.txt CountryList.txt scripts slmodem.txt
Changes Files.txt Slmodem-ALSA.txt Testing.txt
COPYING README slmodemd wvdial.conf
[goldberg@localhost]~/Desktop/SLMODEMD.gcc4>
5-If you logged in as root, skip this one.
If you are already root after having used su skip this one.
Otherwise become root with command su
6-Make the file slmodemd executable with:
chmod +x slmodemd
7-Copy this file to folder /usr/bin with:
cp slmodemd /usr/bin
8-Load the ALSA driver matching your sound device with :
/sbin/modprobe snd-intel8x0m
9-Start the driver with:
/usr/bin/slmodemd -c USA --alsa hw:1
AND DO NOT STOP IT

From now on, I assume that you will use, as I always do, wvdial to get=20
connected -- but many people prefer kppp or some other more "friendly"=20
and less informative dialler.

10-Configure the dialler with
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
11-Edit the file /etc/wvdial.conf:
remove the leading ; in lines meant to include the data supplied to=20
you by your Internet Services Provider.
replace the username field <Username> by in my case goldberg=20
WITHOUT those < > brackets
do the same for the phone number and password
   save and exit the editor
12-Start the connection with
wvdial

If anything fails, show us WHERE in this list and COPY AND REPORT=20
EXACTLY THE COMPLETE ERROR MESSAGE.
