Thanks for your quick answer, I was beginning to consider reinstalling
Fedora 2 ;-)

Now I guess
sl-modem-daemon_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4_i386.deb
is obsolete and could not work on Gutsy anyway .

One thing I don't understand is why alsa mode now seems to be
necessary while I could run the modem in Fedora without it.

 I also saw that the following helps in wvdial.conf
Init3 =3D AT MS=3D34

http://resiak.livejournal.com/48046.html )
