My friend got it to work without any hassle:

Linux Distribution: Debian 2.2 r2 "potato"
Kernel version : 2.2.18pre21
Notebook model : IBM Thinkpad T20
Modem model : Lucent Win Modem, PCI
Driver package : ltmodem-5.99b.tar.gz

1. Downloaded the driver package
2. Uncompressed the package (tar zxvf ltmodem-5.99b.tar.gz)
3. Run the commands:
       ./build_module
       ./ltinst2
       ./autoload
4. Changed the pppconfig device to: /dev/ttyLT0
5. Re-boot

That's was all.
