Check Documentation/Changes of your 2.4.4 kernel tree.  You might need
to upgrade other packages as well.  For one, kernel 2.4.x requires at
least pppd 2.4.0.

I got it to work on RH 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2-2, and also with 2.4.3-13
that came from RH updates.
