Alan,
Verify that DNS is really working - try using the "host" command
in a terminal. Example:
13% host www.cnn.com
www.cnn.com is an alias for cnn.com.
cnn.com has address 64.236.16.84
cnn.com has address 64.236.16.116
cnn.com has address 64.236.24.4
cnn.com has address 64.236.24.12
cnn.com has address 64.236.24.20
cnn.com has address 64.236.24.28
cnn.com has address 64.236.16.20
cnn.com has address 64.236.16.52

If this doesn't work, then DNS isn't work. Look at
/etc/resolv.conf and see if you're ISP's info has
been entered. Try "man resolv.conf". You can probably
get away with a single line "nameserver" entry, with
the DNS host using the numeric IP address (dot notation).
