Anand,
Please try the CONNECT with wvdial. Your ltmodem driver installation is
clearly fine now on your
Red Hat Linux release 7.3 (Valhalla)
with current Kernel-version 2.4.18-3
With modem
08:08.0 Class 0780: 11c1:0448 (rev 01)
Communication controller: Lucent Microelectronics WinModem 56k (rev 01)
This following may be as simple as a User Password problem:
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home chat[10273]: ATD8181511^M^M
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home chat[10273]: CONNECT
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home chat[10273]: -- got it
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home chat[10273]: send (/d/c^M)
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home pppd[10272]: Serial connection established.
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home pppd[10272]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home pppd[10272]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Oct 1 19:36:22 Home /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up
Oct 1 19:36:30 Home pppd[10272]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Oct 1 19:36:30 Home pppd[10272]: Modem hangup
Oct 1 19:36:30 Home pppd[10272]: Connection terminated.
Oct 1 19:36:30 Home /etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not
supported
Oct 1 19:36:31 Home pppd[10272]: Exit.
Its opaque why the kernel is calling for:
Oct 1 20:31:07 Home modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-204
Oct 1 20:31:07 Home last message repeated 6 times
Oct 1 20:31:07 Home modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-174
Oct 1 20:31:07 Home last message repeated 15 times
Oct 1 20:31:08 Home modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-154
Oct 1 20:31:08 Home last message repeated 31 times
Oct 1 20:31:08 Home modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-156
Oct 1 20:31:08 Home last message repeated 31 times
These char-major are designations for:
154 = /dev/pmu Macintosh PowerBook power manager
154 char Specialix RIO serial card
156 = /dev/lcd Front panel LCD display
156 char Specialix RIO serial card
174 = /dev/uctrl SPARCbook 3 microcontroller
174 char SmartIO serial card
204 = /dev/video/em8300 EM8300 DVD decoder control
204 char Low-density serial ports
from /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt
