IF the Mandrake bootup sequence attempts configuration the modem,
it will set:
/dev/modem --> /dev/ttyS1 or 3 or 3
Check with
# ls -l /dev/modem
If inappropriate
# rm /dev/modem
# ln -s /dev/Correct /dev/modem
