Hello 

I thought I'd post the answer to my problem so it will
be in the archive should there be one for this list.

I have a Toshiba 2595xDVD laptop.
I loaded Debian's Potato version of linux.
My laptop has a lucent winmodem.

I got the drivers necessary to use my modem from 
the archive table at http://www.heby.de/ltmodem.
I used ltmodem-6.00b8.tar.gz and the noise module.

Sometimes the canadian ftp link was a better source as
one would be up when the other was down.

I had to learn that to search for packages in Debian's
dselect program the first search uses the 
forward slash '/' and each subsequent search for the
same thing uses the backslash '\'. I searched for
