You can keyword search the package lists with
# apt-cache search KeyWord
Try for example :
# apt-cache search apt
# apt-cache search apt | grep apt
Display details with a command like:
# apt-cache show PackageName
In particular:
# apt-cache show synaptic
# apt-get -s install synaptic
# apt-get install synatic

Debian is the best.
Have fun.
